Description
The main purpose of the equation is to allow scientists to quantify the uncertainty of the factors which determine the number of extraterrestrial civilizations in our galaxy with which we might come in contact.
It is interesting to note that this equation is not considering the other 100 billion galaxies outside our own, non-intelligent life, or extinct intelligent races. Only the probability of intelligent races currently residing in our galaxy and capable of communication.
Results for N vary depending on the parameters for the variables which are under intense scientific debate, but estimates range from a pessimistic N = 0 (we're alone) to n = tens of thousands (we are not alone).
